The State Opera House was established in 1934 in this beautiful landmark building that even makes an appearance on the 2,000 KZT note. Its pretty yellow paint job and classical Italianate architecture with Oriental flourishes means it's hard to miss. Despite the imposing surroundings, coming to a performance here is a wonderfully democratic experience - where else can you see opera and ballet performances for a maximum ticket price of less than £10? The company stages a huge repertoire of over 40 Kazakh and western pieces, from ballets Romeo & Juliet, Giselle and Swan Lake to operas Turandot, La Traviata and Aida; as well as classical music concerts and modern dance performances. Tickets cost from 400-2,000 KZT and performances often begin at 6.30pm.
